Naomi Atherton played beautifully on her French horn. She commented on each piece, demonstrating a remarkable echo effect by playing close to the piano and pointing the bell of her horn directly at the raised piano lid. That created an eerie effect to match the piece, Lamente d’Orfeo, by Volker David Kircher.
In the Dukas Villanelle she combined the sound of the older horn without keys, demonstrating the strikingly different quality of the notes formed using her hand in the bell with the more regulated notes of the keyed instrument.
Annabelle supported her superbly and had her own opportunity to play Enrique Granados’ Goyescas Suite most sensitively. Altogether a delightful event, presented to an audience seated in a semi-circle.
