St Andrew's on Channel 4 News

St Andrew's featured in last night's Channel 4 news coverage.  Journalist Gary Gibbon filmed Sheffield's Socialist Choir as they rehearsed inside the church.  (Contrary to the narration, their backdrop is the church itself, not the church hall.)

What was the story?  The future of the Labour Party's relationship with trade unions.  In a 5-minute piece, Gibbon looks at what's changing and how it is being received by people in the traditionally Labour-faithful city of Sheffield.

Marking our Anniversaries

Anniversary logoSt Andrew’s United Reformed Church is celebrating a double anniversary this month.  In 1853, 160 years ago, the church was founded as a pastorate of the Presbyterian Church of England.  Then in 1953, 60 years ago, the church was re-opened after the repair of substantial fire damage during the Sheffield Blitz of December 1940.

CORRECTION: 10:30am Pentecost at St Marks

As part of Churches Together in Broomhill and Broomhall we continue our tradition of meeting for worship with our CTBB partners on Pentecost Sunday.

As we recall the descent of the Holy Spirit on the disciples after the first Easter, and how witnesses miraculously understood the message of good news in their own language -- good news for everyone -- it is good to join together and witness to our shared faith in Christ.

Road Closures 12th May

More than five thousand runners will be taking part in Sheffield Half Marathon this weekend.  As usual, this means that many roads in central Sheffield will be closed to traffic for all or part of Sunday morning.

The affected areas include the section of the ringroad passing outside St Andrews (closed to vehicles from 8:30am).  It will be possible to approach the church via Glossop Road/Springvale Road and use the car park as usual.  Roads should reopen at midday.

Sarah's Farewells

Sarah Hall, our minister for 8 years, has moved to a new pastorate in Southampton.  Sheila Cooke provides an account of the farewell celebrations that took place in March:
